By DSE/CFA - 4th February 2003 - Back to News

Today has seen some successful backburns undertaken, particularly in the Snowy River National Park and north east of Swifts Creek.

Crews have been blacking out around Cobungra Station, monitoring the fire below Davenport Village near Hotham and thickening backburns along McKenzies Track and towards Escarpment Track.

Dozer work continues in the Tongio area, tracking of spotfires south of Brookville and backburning near Cassilis.

Crews are patrolling and blacking out in the Amboyne and Dellicknora sectors, with more backburns planned when conditions are favourable.

Spot fires 15kms north of Dargo and one east of Dargo River have had crews working on them today and will continue into the night. Control lines north of Dargo are being strengthened and the main fire front remains about 25kms north of the town.

Gippsland’s Incident Management Teams at Swifts Creek, Orbost and Dargo have redeveloped strategies to contain the fire and are working towards implementing the new plans with assistance from American Incident Management experts. They will join other specialists from New Zealand, Queensland and New South Wales.

Regional Fire Manager David Tainsh said that he appreciated the visiting teams’ input and is confident that they will provide a fresh perspective to this campaign.

"These people have a tremendous amount of experience and knowledge in these situations and will assist us enormously with the difficult tasks that lie ahead," Mr Tainsh said.

The Gippsland community Fire Information line is open from 6.00am till midnight every day. Please call for more information about the fire situation and to report stock losses and injuries or to inquire about post fire assistance – 1800 668 066.
