Neighbourhood Watch Newsletter November 2005 Area LTB1 Bridle Estate (NHW100)Danger for Small Children, Zone Leader Required, Home Safety, Police Crime Report. By Malcolm Lawrence - 2nd November 2005 - Back to News Neighbourhood Watch Area LTB1, Bridle Estate.
Area Manager, Carmen Cook 5134 1920.
Next Meeting
When: Monday 21st of November 2005
Time: 7:15 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
Where: Salvation Army Hall,
Bridle Road, Morwell.
With Summer approaching families will be taking to the water in large numbers, with the danger of drowning for small children.
Drowning is the biggest accidental killer of children under five. Adult supervision is essential at all times. Supervision means constant watching, not occasionally glancing at your child while you read or snooze. Many children’s drowning accidents occur in those few seconds while you answer the phone or a knock at the door. If you must leave the swimming pool area for any reason, take your child with you.
Familiarise your child with water. Helping your child learn water familiarisation skills can be fun for all of you. Your local swimming pool has swimming classes. Water familiarisation skills are an important start for Swim and Survive programs.
Swimming lessons and floaties are no substitute for adult supervision.
With a drowning accident, start resuscitation and dial 000 and ask for an ambulance.
Zone Leader:
Zone 29 with 30 houses, which is situated at the East end of Nindoo Drive and the South end of Gabo Way, has no Zone Leader at the moment. Would someone like to volunteer to deliver the newsletters in this zone once a month? Ring Dave Soutar on 5134 3744 or Carmen on 5134 1920.
Home Safety:
In an attempt to make our homes secure against intruders and burglars, we often overlook issues of life protection in the event of a fire.
There are many security devices, such as deadlocks and window grilles, that prevent intruders from getting in, or thieves removing goods. The danger, in a fire situation, is that these security devices may prevent you and your family getting out. The Country Fire Authority attends numerous house fires where access is hindered by security devices. In other cases residents have been found in a critical condition next to deadlocked doors and windows, unable to find the key and use the door or window as an exit.
· Never deadlock yourself in your home.
· Install deadlocks with a safety release so they can be opened from inside without keys when you are home.
· If a door needs a key to operate the lock, leave the key in the lock
· Ensure that security grilles, screens or shutters fixed to any window can be readily opened from the inside.
· Where security locks are fitted to windows the keys should be left in the lock, especially bedrooms.
Unscrupulous Sales Tactics:
If you have been placed under a great deal of pressure by a phone company to buy the product they are selling, you can complain to the Telecommunications Industry Ombudsman, on 1800 062 058 or go to www.tio.com.au
