Illustrations in Australian children’s picture books celebrated

By Latrobe City Council - 15th August 2005 - Back to News

An exhibition featuring artworks from Australian illustrators, who have captured particular aspects of the Australian environment through their illustrations in Australian children’s picture books, is currently showing at the Latrobe Regional Gallery.

‘Land Marks: The environment etched in Australian children’s literature’,

is on tour from the Dromkeen Museum and Gallery in Riddells Creek and is a delightful view into the world of classic Australian children’s books.

Gallery director, Louise Tegart said, the works combine to inspire viewers to respect, celebrate and be thoughtful of the Australian environment.

"The illustrations explore a range of environmental themes and cover a range of artistic mediums and styles, from intricate natural collages to the defined outlines of linocuts and the sensitive application of coloured pencil," Ms Tegart said.

"The authors and illustrators in the exhibition have embraced the picture book as a vehicle for bringing the Australian environment up close and into the hands of the reader. Each book is a celebration of the beauty of the Australian landscape and its animals. The creators also aim to further develop our understanding and appreciation of the environment and man’s impact upon it.

"Indigenous illustrator Bronwyn Bancroft and Arone Raymond Meeks have created artworks that depict their connectedness to the land; while the miracles of nature and the creatures that inhabit it, are represented in works by Graeme Base and Kim Dale.

"Other favourite children’s book authors include Jeannie Baker, Rachel Tonkins and Roland Harvey," Ms Tegart said.

Ms Tegart added that in conjunction with the exhibition, the Gallery will be running two Children’s Book Week activities during the school holidays.

"Linking art and literature, the combination of art and language activities are designed to extend and enrich the literary experience of children," Ms Tegart said.

"On Tuesday 23 August local author Dawn Gillies will conduct a workshop and present a reading from her book ‘The Gippsland Panther’. On Wednesday 24 August, a special mystery guest will present readings from Book Week short listed picture books and conduct a series of activities," Ms Tegart said.

There will be two sessions, 10.30am and 1pm each day which both last for an hour. Cost is $2 per child. Bookings are essential, please telephone the Latrobe Regional Gallery on 5128 5700.

The Latrobe Regional Gallery is located at 138 Commercial Road, Morwell, and is open Monday to Friday 10am to 5pm, and on weekends 11am to 4pm. The gallery is closed public holidays. For further information about exhibitions at the gallery, please telephone 5128 5700. Entry is free.
