"The illustrations explore a range of environmental themes and cover a range of artistic mediums and styles, from intricate natural collages to the defined outlines of linocuts and the sensitive application of coloured pencil," Ms Tegart said. "The authors and illustrators in the exhibition have embraced the picture book as a vehicle for bringing the Australian environment up close and into the hands of the reader. Each book is a celebration of the beauty of the Australian landscape and its animals. The creators also aim to further develop our understanding and appreciation of the environment and man’s impact upon it. "Indigenous illustrator Bronwyn Bancroft and Arone Raymond Meeks have created artworks that depict their connectedness to the land; while the miracles of nature and the creatures that inhabit it, are represented in works by Graeme Base and Kim Dale. "Other favourite children’s book authors include Jeannie Baker, Rachel Tonkins and Roland Harvey," Ms Tegart said. Ms Tegart added that in conjunction with the exhibition, the Gallery will be running two Children’s Book Week activities during the school holidays. "Linking art and literature, the combination of art and language activities are designed to extend and enrich the literary experience of children," Ms Tegart said. "On Tuesday 23 August local author Dawn Gillies will conduct a workshop and present a reading from her book ‘The Gippsland Panther’. On Wednesday 24 August, a special mystery guest will present readings from Book Week short listed picture books and conduct a series of activities," Ms Tegart said.
