Learn The Traditional Art Of Bookbinding At The Gallery

For centuries artists have been involved in making books, either by themselves or in collaboration with others, such as, writers and poets or master printers.

By Latrobe City - 28th April 2011 - Back to News

Now, Latrobe Regional Gallery is offering a bookbinding workshop for youth and adults to learn this fine skill. The workshop will run on Saturday 21 May from 11am to 4pm.

Latrobe City’s arts director, Julie Adams, said that the beauty of a book does not always lie in the content alone.

"The books in themselves can be beautiful objects. A hand-bound book is even more special in our technological world. Many artists have put their unique ‘stamp’ on books over the years by marrying this traditional craft with contemporary materials and art making processes.

"Participants in the workshop will have the opportunity to create a hand-bound book using these traditional methods but also create a book that is an expression of their own creativity.

"Coming along to the workshop not only provides an opportunity to learn and develop new skills, but also a chance to spend time with friends or meet new people with similar interests," Ms Adams concluded.

The cost for the workshop is $50 or Gallery Friends Member $45 which includes all materials. Places are limited and bookings are essential.
