Approximately 70 Career Teachers from Gippsland Secondary Schools and several suburban schools will be visiting the Gippsland Campus on Friday, November 24. The teachers will receive presentations from David Osborne (VTAC) and Monash Marketing. The presentations will update teachers on changes to the VTAC processes and Monash Gippsland’s prospective student activities for 2007. A lunch will also be provided as a thankyou for supporting the Gippsland Campus throughout the year.
Marg Lynn, Karen Crinall and Chris Laming from the School of Humanities, Communications and Social Sciences launched an e-journal on November 19 in association with the Australian Institute of Welfare and Community Workers (AIWCW), the professional accrediting body of the Social and Community Welfare courses. The e-journal called ‘Practice Reflexions’ will publish refereed and non-refereed articles and book reviews and will also host a discussion group as well as information on workshops and conferences.
• Making the Grade
Journalism lecturer at the Gippsland Campus, Ndaeyo Uko was a distinguished international speaker at Harvard University's Nieman Conference on Narrative Journalism in Boston from November 17 to 19. Ndaeyo spoke on narrative interviewing and served on a panel. The Nieman Conference speakers are renowned American and, sometimes, international writers, journalism scholars and professionals. The conference is attended by American reporters every year. Ndaeyo Uko's presentations were based on his upcoming book, "Story Building: Narrative Techniques for News and Feature Writers" scheduled to be published in the United States in 2007 and used as text book in the US and internationally.
A Graduation Ceremony was held last week for students undertaking the English Language Bridging Program. The ceremony was attended by the Mayor of Latrobe City, Lisa Price and staff from the Gippsland Campus.
Dr Paul Atkinson from the School of Humanities, Communications and Social Sciences was recently involved in the Preliminary Judging Day for the United Nations Association of Australia Media Peace Awards 2006. Dr Atkinson was involved in short listing television documentaries, current affairs and news programs. The Media Peace Awards were initiated as a national program in 1978 to recognizing Australian media attempts to promote awareness on social justice and humanitarian issues through balanced reporting.
