By Monash University, Gippsland - 8th November 2004 - Back to News

• Making the Grade

A record number of students have selected Gippsland Campus as their first preference. A total of 809 students selected Gippsland courses as their first choice for study in 2005, up from the previous record of 761 first round selections that was set in 2004. Overall demand for Gippsland courses has grown substantially since 2000. The courses which experienced substantial growth included the Bachelor of Civil and Environmental Engineering as well as double degrees in Arts/Education, Sport and Outdoor Recreation/Education and Nursing and Rural Health Practice.

The re-election of George W. Bush as President of the United States is likely to foster further consolidation of Australia’s relationship with the United States and hasten final agreement of the US-Australia free trade agreement, according to Dr. Keith Wilson Deputy Head of School in Humanities, Communications and Social Science. While Prime Minister John Howard, who indicated he wanted President Bush to win, is likely to benefit from the outcome, the result presents another challenge for Mark Latham and the Labour Opposition who need to reaffirm their relationship with Australia’s key ally.
