Wattle Point Boat Ramp ReopenedThe Wattle Point boat ramp that was recently closed after the adjacent landing and jetty was burnt to water level by vandals has been re-opened. By East Gippsland Shire - 23rd October 2007 - Back to News Located at the end of Romawi Road and providing access to Lake Victoria, the East Gippsland Shire’s ramp had to be closed because the landing was required for safe use of the facility.
The re-opening follows collaboration between the Shire and Gippsland Ports as well as approaches from nearby residents and an accommodation centre that relies on the boat ramp to support recreational and business activities.
East Gippsland Shire manager assets Gordon Charles said staff from Gippsland Ports and the Council met soon after the 30 September fire to determine how quickly the ramp could be re-opened.
"Gippsland Ports readily agreed to make their wharf construction crew available to reconstruct the landing," he said.
"This was done at Council’s expense using a combination of timber structural members and recycled plastic decking components with a handrail provided to prevent access to the yet to be reconstructed jetty."
Mr Charles said Gippsland Ports were also committed to rebuilding the jetty but at this stage material supply delays have prevented them setting a completion date.
"The Shire is grateful to Gippsland Ports for making their wharf crew available so that the ramp could become operational in a very short space of time," Mr Charles said.
