Minister Persuaded Not To RezoneThe Planning Minister, Matthew Guy, yesterday announced that he had decided not to rezone 23 hectares of pristine Ventnor farming land for residential development. By Bass Coast - 4th October 2011 - Back to News The community and Bass Coast Shire Council presented a strong, persistent case which persuaded the Minister to reconsider.
Bass Coast Mayor, Cr Veronica Dowman said she received a call from the Minister yesterday morning advising that he would not gazette Amendment C125 and rezone the land.
Furthermore the Minister said he would approve Amendment C93 without change. "C93 sets the town boundaries for ten of our coastal communities," said Cr Dowman.
The Minster said he was satisfied that C93 will meet the State Government's policy on ensuring adequate land supply for future growth for the next 15 years.
"This is fantastic news and is a great relief to our community," said Cr Dowman.
"We are very happy that Minister Guy listened to the people of Ventnor and reviewed his decision. It justifies the work that we have done over the past decade to ensure we have strong planning processes and plans in place.
The meeting, organised by the Ventnor community to protest the original decision, became more of a community celebration when the Mayor announced the Minister’s decision to the crowd.
"People were overjoyed when I told them the news. The Minister has listened to the community and their local government," explained Cr Dowman.
"The Phillip Island and mainland coastal communities sent a clear message to the Minister and I am very pleased he listened, responded and has endorsed our strategic planning for future growth," said Cr Dowman.
"I also want to thank the local community for the incredible work they did to drive this campaign." said Cr Dowman.
