Footpath Clean Up Steams AheadThompson Avenue in Cowes will receive a face-lift next month. By Bass Coast Shire Council - 25th February 2009 - Back to News Bass Coast Shire Council will steam clean the Thompson Avenue footpaths between Chapel Street and The Esplanade, from 1- 19 March 2009.
Council’s Infrastructure Director, Steven Piasente said the clean up would address community concerns about state of the high profile street.
"Thompson Avenue gets a huge amount of traffic over the summer months and the footpaths certainly need a good clean," said Mr Piasente.
"Our regular street cleaners use air-pressured blowers but they cannot lift the build up of food and droppings from under seats and around rubbish bins."
The high pressure steam cleaning is scheduled between the hours of 7.30pm and 1.30am, Sunday through to Thursday. Work will take place at night to limit the amount of disruption to traders and customers. No work is programmed for Friday or Saturday nights.
Although the amount of water used is minimal, initial concerns about water use in the current climate meant the project had been put on hold.
"We will be using water from a rainwater tank installed at the Cowes depot," confirmed Mr Piasente.
"This means the cleaning will not have any impact on the water supplies for the area."
Mr Piasente said that the steam cleaning process is environmentally friendly and chemical free, but the area would still be cordoned off when cleaning was taking place.
"The water heats up to 150 degrees Celsius and and operates under high pressure," explained Mr Piasente.
"For that reason, there will be barriers up to stop people walking anywhere near the cleaner.
The cleaning will also including parts of Chapel Street and The Esplanade.
