Breakaway shows strength of Echuca-Moama’s hold on Don Porter Trophy

The entire Echuca- Moama team together with Tour leader Peter Wrolich from Ballarat*eureka, David McCann from Latrobe City and Scott Sunderland from the Malaysian Air team participated in a long and powerful seven-man breakaway in yesterday’s Sun Tour Stage-10, Maryborough to Daylesford.

It once again showed the other three municipal teams vying for the Don Porter Trophy, that the Echuca-Moama team, a massive 1hr 22min 40sec ahead of runners up Latrobe City, is going to be extremely hard to beat. There are just four days and five stages to go in the 2001 Herald Sun Tour.

Echuca Moama retained its strong lead in the overall team classification, Latrobe City slipping to 6^th position, with Ballarat*eureka in 10^th, and Southern Grampians 14^th .

Peter Wrolich from the Ballarat*eureka team maintains his position as Tour leader, leading the new runner up, Zbigniew Piatek from the Echuca-Moama team, by 3mins 6secs; and Australian Steve Williams slipping to 3^rd position, 5mins 16secs behind the leader. Echuca Moama riders Remigius Lupeikis and Kazimierz Stafiej have moved up to 4^th and 5^th.

In the Don Porter Trophy at the conclusion of Stage-10, Echuca-Moama leads Latrobe by 1hr 22min 40sec; Ballarat*eureka by 1hr 42min 48sec; and the Southern Grampians team by 2hr 26min 45sec.

The Don Porter Trophy is being fought for by all municipal teams participating in the 2001 Herald Sun Tour and was formerly called the Latrobe Regional Challenge Cup, a magnificent Bohemian crystal cup initiated and presented by Latrobe City in 1999, won by the Latrobe team in the 1999 Herald Sun Tour, and taken out by the Echuca-Moama team in 2000.

The Don Porter Trophy will be presented to the first municipal team in the overall team classifications at the conclusion of the Herald Sun Tour in Geelong on Sunday 28 October.
