Update On Bogong (South) Complex Fire

Firefighters tackling the Gippsland fires will be spending today identifying the latest outbreaks

By DSE/CFA - 10th February 2003 - Back to News

Firefighters tackling the Gippsland fires will be spending today identifying the latest outbreaks, consolidating control lines and rounding up spot fires, as they seek to make the most of favourable weather conditions.

The southerly winds which are expected to remain for the next couple of days should make their job easier, but smoke may continue to hang about in the valleys and there will be no relaxation in the firefighting efforts.

At the fires’ southeastern end, work has begun to prepare a section between Gelantipy and Campbells Knob for possible back-burning later today.

Residents may experience heavy airborne cold ash around Deddick, Dellicknora, Bendoc and the entire Bonang Rd area.

The ash comes from the fires in the Snowy River National Park and will be experienced a long distance from the fire front. This does not mean that fire is imminent, however residents should remain vigilant over the next few days.

At the western end of the fires, particular attention will be paid to the Sarah Range and Ti-tree Spur, as well as ensuring that any spot fires near the Wild Horse track are extinguished.

A high priority is to complete a backburn along Mathieson’s Track, which was impossible last night due to light drizzle.

The good news is that the Great Alpine Road will be open today – during daylight hours only – between Dinner Plain and Harrietville.
