Thompson Avenue Development

A proposal for the development of residential apartments and retail shops in Thompson Avenue, Cowes is being considered by Bass Coast Shire Council.

By Bass Coast Shire Council - 19th September 2008 - Back to News

Council’s Development Services Manager, Angelo D’Costa, said a planning scheme amendment and permit application were being assessed at the same time.

"The planning permit for 85-87 Thompson Avenue in Cowes involves nine retail shops and two floors of residential apartments," said Mr D’Costa.

"The development also includes an underground car park and a pedestrian thoroughfare next to the Cowes Cultural Centre.

"The planning amendment involves rezoning this land from Residential 1 Zone to the Business 1 Zone," Mr D’Costa continued.

"It also removes a number of existing overlays and applies the Design and Development Overlay."

The development proposal has attracted interest for its unique features.

"I believe this is the first development on the Island to use underground car parking," said Mr D’Costa.

"Studies have also shown that incorporating residential living into the CBD creates a safer space.

"The inclusion of a pedestrian thoroughfare is also an interesting feature of this proposal."

Mr D’Costa said the proposal had been on public exhibition for over a month.

"The formal exhibition period closed on 8 September," said Mr D’Costa.

"Our Planners will now review the submissions and prepare a report for the Council meeting on 15 October.

"At that meeting, Council will decide whether to proceed with the amendment or not."
