Realigning the rail trail

Work underway in Kilcunda rail trail, but will still be open for its users.

By news@gippsland - 19th May 2021 - Back to News

A section of the Bass Coast Rail Trail at Kilcunda, near the Lionel Rose car park, will be realigned this month, due to ongoing damage caused by coastal erosion. The $32,000 project is being fully funded as part of Bass Coast Shire Council’s 2020/21 Capital Works Program. Work will start during the week ending 14 May and is expected to take four weeks to complete.

Rail trail to remain open for users

This project will see 155 metres of the Trail diverted inland, which means the works will require the removal of some vegetation, however new vegetation will be planted along the edge of the new trail. This project will also include the modification of the existing timber stairs leading from the Lionel Rose car park to match up with the realignment of the Rail Trail, the construction of a timber retaining wall, relocation of a timber bench seat and post and wire fence works.

The Rail Trail will remain open for all users while these works are underway, however some traffic and pedestrian control measures may be required. Council understands that these works may present an inconvenience to the community and Rail Trail users and asks for patience during these times.

Response to erosion

Bass Coast Shire Mayor, Cr Brett Tessari, said this realignment is a short-term response to the ongoing coastal erosion impacting on this section of the trail. "Council is currently overseeing an options analysis that will inform the response to erosion in the longer-term. This includes an investigation into the coastal processes which are influencing erosion at this site. This project will be completed at the end of June." Cr Tessari said.
