Tafe Moves Step Closer To Sale Relocation

By news@gippsland - 30th June 2004 - Back to News

The foundations have been laid for educational opportunities in Wellington to receive a tremendous boost as the State Government gives planning approval for East Gippsland TAFE to develop concept drawings to support a potential relocation to the centre of Sale – a move backed by Wellington Shire Council.

This announcement moves the Institute a step closer to relocating from its outdated West Sale Aerodrome campus – which is difficult for students to access without their own transport – to a new purpose-built complex on the former army drill hall site on Punt Lane in Sale.

Just as important, this news lessens some 12 months of uncertainty that has hung over the future of the proposed site – part of which presently provides home to the Sale Netball Association – and confirms TAFE’s commitment to Gippsland.

Said Wellington Shire Council’s Chief Executive Officer Lyndon Webb:

"Extensive ongoing discussions will be held between all these parties over the coming months as detailed plans for the new TAFE campus on Punt Lane take shape and as we progress negotiations with the netball association over their location options.

"One of our priorities is to ensure that the association has a suitable new home. We appreciate the cooperation and constructive ongoing discussions we have had with them over this issue and are keen to maintain this as the project advances.

"Consultation will also be carried out involving the surrounding community."

East Gippsland TAFE Chief Executive Officer Angela Hutson said: "TAFE’s relocation to the centre of Sale will greatly strengthen educational opportunities and the skills pool available to local businesses and industry, adding to what is already being achieved in these areas.

"Realising the development and expansion potential of TAFE in Gippsland will bring associated benefits to the local economy, including employment.

"Subject to further State Government approvals, construction work on the new TAFE campus could commence within two years."
