The Superbikes event runs from 2 – 4 March. The hard rubbish collection for People traditionally put hard rubbish out in the week leading up to the collection date. With 65,000 people expected to attend the Superbikes, there are real concerns that items left out for collection will create safety issues and look unsightly. Council’s Acting Director of Infrastructure, Steve Piasente said the timing was regrettable. "Unfortunately the dates for our hard rubbish collection are set out a year in advance," said Mr Piasente. "When we set the 2007 dates, we were trying to work around the Easter holidays and at that stage, the Superbikes date had not been confirmed. Mr Piasente said it would be difficult to move the collection dates, as they had already been advertised. "People have had the dates as part of their waste calendars since July last year," said Mr Piasente. "Even if we moved the date, there would be a lot of people who would still put out their hard rubbish for a 5 March pick up. "We believe the best option is to work to minimise the impact of having the collection occurring so close to the Superbikes," continued Mr Piasente. Although items are allowed to be placed on the kerbside in the week prior to collection, Council is urging residents in "Wherever possible, we are asking people not to put their items out until Sunday afternoon (4 March)," said Mr Piasente. "I also want to remind everyone that they need to place the rubbish so it doesn’t create a hazard for traffic and pedestrians. Details of the hard rubbish collection are available on from Council’s Customer Service Centres, on the waste calendars, in the Information Booklet or from our website (www.basscoast.vic.gov.au).
