Zofia Pawlaczek, Senior Lecturer, Faculty of Education at the Gippsland Campus has generated widespread interest from her article ‘Australia’s obesity crisis points to a question of how PE is taught’ published in ‘The Age’ recently. Ms Pawlaczek has received invitations both state and nationwide, from the Department of Education, Secondary Schools and Education and Sports publications, requesting further input on this topic. Ms Pawlaczek will also be speaking in NSW next week on the changes and challenges facing PE teachers in the new democratic Poland which are not so very different from the current challenges faced by Australian PE teachers.

Mr Chris Panter, School of Applied Sciences and Engineering is currently conducting fieldwork at Universities in Los Banos and Manila in the Phillipines to further collaborative research into the control of the malarial mosquito.

Professor Al Rainnie, Institute for Regional Studies at the Gippsland Campus will be presenting papers at two conferences in the United Kingdom in July. Professor Rainnie will be speaking at the Labour Movements conference in Sheffield and presenting "The Miners Strike 20 Years on : Challenges and Changes’ in Newcastle.

Ms Susan Purdy, Lecturer at the Gippsland Centre for Art and Design is currently exhibiting a collection of her work at the Latrobe Regional Gallery, Morwell until July 25. ‘The Secret of Emptiness’ are works from Ms Purdy’s Australia Council Residency in Taiwan and ‘New Branches on an Old Tree’ from her residency at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Melbourne during 2002.

Mr Ray Beebe, School of Applied Sciences and Engineering was recently acknowledged in the Emerald Literati Club Awards for Excellence 2004 for his paper on ‘Condition monitoring of steam turbines by performance analysis’ in the Journal of Quality in Maintenance Engineering. The awards are offered through Emerald Group Publishing Ltd, publisher of the largest collection of international business and management journals.

DNA workshops for Gippsland secondary schools will held at the Gippsland Campus from July 12-16. The School of Applied Sciences and Engineering offer the workshops to provide students with practical hands on experience in a molecular biology laboratory with experiments relevant to their VCE Biology studies. The students are able to conduct their own experiments with forensic tests matching DNA and DNA transformation which forms the basis of genetic engineering. Approximately 218 students from ten schools across Gippsland will take part in these workshops over the five days.
