Unearthing of a time capsule discovered in Moe

A time capsule buried by former parents, staff and committee members of a now-closed childcare centre will be unearthed at Fowler Street, Moe on Wednesday before the Council-owned site is put up for auction.

Latrobe City Council mayor, Councillor Michael Rossiter, said the time capsule may have remained unopened if a former staff member of the now-closed Magda Karwath Children’s Centre had not contacted Council’s property and statutory services coordinator, Henry Morrison.

"This Council property, the former Moe Early Learning Centre site, has been advertised for sale by public auction on Saturday, 16 July. Magda Karwath Children’s Centre childcare worker Gabrielle Riches contacted Henry when she saw the auction notice in the newspaper and was reminded by a friend of the unopened time capsule," Cr Rossiter said.

"Another council staff member inspected the property and uncovered the time capsule plaque in a small garden bed on the left hand side of the driveway entrance to the property.

"It revealed the capsule was buried by Magda Karwath Children’s Centre staff in 1988 and was due to be unearthed on 4 December 2013."

Councillor Rossiter said an event to unearth the time capsule has been organised for 4pm, Wednesday, 13 July at 38 Fowler Street, Moe. Former staff members and parents of former students have been invited to attend.

"Given it has been 28 years since the capsule was buried, most former staff members have little memory of what they contributed. It will be interesting to see what is uncovered when the capsule is opened," Cr Rossiter concluded.
