Australian Sustainable Industry Research Centre (ASIRC) at the Gippsland Campus will be showcasing their current research and technology at the Victorian Governments’ Centre for Innovation and Technology Commercialisation, Innovation@257 exhibition space from June 28 until July 31. The Centre is located at 257 Collins Street, Melbourne and is accessible to Victorian innovators, industry, educational institutions, the public and national and international visitors. As well as displaying ASIRC’s innovative technology and services, they will also be promoting Gippsland as the place to be with information and displays from the Gippsland Campus, Latrobe City and the Gippsland region. • Making the Grade

Secondary teachers can now upgrade their mathematics skills and qualify as mathematics teachers by undertaking the new innovative Graduate Certificate of Mathematics Studies at the Gippsland Campus. The course which was developed through a $65,000 Monash grant will emphasis the use of current and emerging technology for use in a 21st century Mathematics classroom. The new cohort of students, which consists of registered teachers and graduates from around Victoria, will begin the program in Semester 2, with an expected increase in enrolments next year through the Victorian Government’s new Rural Retrain Program.

Rebecca Lester, postgraduate student in the Gippsland School of Applied Sciences and Engineering received a grant to host a conference, ’Wood to Water’: the effectiveness of the re-introduction of woody debris as a biodiversity enhancement tool in streams in agricultural environments. The conference will be held on the Gippsland Campus from September 29-30.

• Open Subject

Open to the public, the very popular Peninsula Campus ‘Winemaking Course’ will be held again in August. The course for serious beginners, is aimed at people wanting to produce small quantities of their own wine or just an enhanced knowledge about the winemaking process. The course covers grape handling and composition, juice selection, measurement of sugar and acid, yeast and fermentation processes, wine faults and tests to avoid spoilage, additives, oak treatment, bottling and aging potential, innovation in winemaking as well as field tests to wineries in the Peninsula area. The course will be held on each Saturday from 9.30am-1pm, August 7 - September 18 at a cost of $396. Sessions will be led by respected oenologist and wine educator, Ian Hickinbotham RDOe, OAM, (Coonawarra Estate, Kaiser Stuhl, Penfolds), supported by other professionals and winemakers during the course.
