Suspension bridge to provide walk highlightA suspension footbridge will be constructed above the La Trobe River, Noojee as part of the Ralph Cornwell Loch Valley Tramway Walk. By Baw Baw Shire Council - 3rd July 2006 - Back to News A suspension footbridge will be constructed above the La Trobe River, Noojee as part of the Ralph Cornwell Loch Valley Tramway Walk, a joint project between Baw Baw Shire Council, State Government departments, Neerim and District Lions Club and Browns Sawmill.
The footbridge, currently being constructed off-site will be installed over the La Trobe River during July and August this year, according to council chief executive officer Mr Glenn Patterson.
"This is a really exciting part of the project for the Noojee community as the bridge will be a real feature of the town".
The total cost of the tramway walk is $101,000, which is being funded by State Government, Department of Sustainability and Environment, Baw Baw Shire Council and Neerim and District Lions Club.
"Work on the project is currently progressing well," said Mr Patterson.
"The opening of the bridge and walk is on schedule for early November this year."
The project will develop the pathway on the route of the tramway from the town, rebuild the walking bridge over the La Trobe River and continue the pathway from the river to the tramway cuttings where the original tramline ran.
The walk will be named the Ralph Cornwall Loch Valley Tramway Walk in memory of the Noojee local who worked with his father at the nearby Noojee Sawmill and was a forest overseer for the former Forestry Commission.
Ralph was often called upon to assist people in their research to locate old mills and tramlines as he had a great knowledge of Noojee and its history. It was always his dream to develop the Loch Valley Tramway walk and as a member of the Neerim and District Lions Club asked for their support, but unfortunately passed away before seeing the project completed.
