Bronze Medallist Getting Set For Future Success

Kris McCarthy runs towards his dreams for tomorrow

By Allison Griffiths - 5th November 2002 - Back to News

Kris McCarthy, a 22 yr old from Frankston, Victoria, was on track to become an AFL umpire. In 2000, he gave up umpiring to train full time as a medium distance runner at the Victorian Institute of Sport (www.vis.org.au). McCarthy rocketed to the top of the Australian rankings with what Athletics Australia

( www.athletics.org.au) describe as ‘a string of marvellous performances.’ In July, McCarthy made his mark on Australian athletics by winning a bronze medal in the 800 metres after barely making the Commonwealth track team. McCarthy became the first Australian male to win a medal in 800m male distance since Peter Bourke won in 1982.

McCarthy’s bronze was an even more incredible feat considering McCarthy struggled to make the Manchester team. Due to an injured hamstring, missing the national championships in April and Commonwealth selection trails, his selection for the Manchester team was subject to his fitness.

Since being back in Melbourne McCarthy has had little time to relax, continuing his training for upcoming competitions. McCarthy’s training continues with a focus on refining his technique with new coach, Peter Fortune, to avoid further hamstring injuries.

"Hopefully there wont be too many obstacles but it can be tough getting good competition in Australia."

"Racing in Europe was a good reality check for where I’m at and what I need to do to get to that final."

Athletes such as McCarthy, do not have the opportunity to delve into sponsors pockets to get them to international competitions. "We get ok funding, but more is needed in the development areas as well as at the top so more athletes can go to things such as World Champs." He says.

"Hopefully I will be able to pick up a sponsorship now though. I have been recognized a little more in my home area since I have been home."
