Redevelopment of Lakes Entrance Old Slipway underway as part of central business district masterplan
The Old Slipway site in Lakes Entrance is undergoing transformation. Federal MP Darren Chester praises the progress made. The site will become a public space with various amenities and attractions.
The transformation of the Old Slipway site in Lakes Entrance is well underway with Federal MP Darren Chester (pictured) pleased with the progress this week by East Gippsland Shire's construction crew. "They say good things come to those who wait and the locals and visitors in Lakes Entrance have been very patient when it comes to the Old Slipway site."

Long-neglected slipway site
Mr Chester said, "The site operated as a slipway from 1948 through to 2005, when operations were transferred to a new Bullock Island Boat Yard facility. It has remained largely unused for the past 18 years despite repeated assurances that it would be made usable for the public."
"Redevelopment of the Old Slipway site was identified as a priority action in the Lakes Entrance Foreshore Management Plan 2012 and the more recent Lakes Entrance CBD Masterplan. It was noted as being a high-profile site that had potential to accommodate a range of attractions, facilities and services," said Mr Chester.
Revitalised waterfront space
Mr Chester added, "Yet it remained dormant for years and now it's getting a facelift with the old winch sheds saved and tiered decking installed to allow public access to rare waterfront land."
Mr Chester said the project had received funding from all levels of government and it would create opportunities for hospitality and arts enterprises, local community groups and friends and family to gather. "The Old Slipway site will become an inviting public open space and a welcome addition to our town's public spaces for locals and visitors to enjoy."
