Update On Bogong (South) Complex FireFurther consolidation and asset protection has been the order of the day, with 58kms of containment line north of Buchan between the Timbarra River and Gelantipy almost completed By DSE/CFA - 6th February 2003 - Back to News Further consolidation and asset protection has been the order of the day, with 58kms of containment line north of Buchan between the Timbarra River and Gelantipy almost completed. This line will link with containment works extending from the Swifts Creek area.
The recent wind change to the south east will assist backburning operations, particularly on the eastern sector of the Bogong Complex fire in Gippsland.
Community asset protection work is well advanced in the Gelantipy, Buchan and Buchan South areas.
A contingency of 115 South Australian Country Fire Service personnel will replace the Queensland Fire and Rescue Service tomorrow.
Spotfires off the south eastern edge of the fire near Mount Sugarloaf and Mackieson’s Spur have been causing problems and these have been being bombed by aircraft.
Strategic backburns are on the way to linking up in the Nunniong Plateau area tonight if weather conditions are favourable.
In the Dargo area there has been consolidation of control lines, with some problems holding the spotfires south of the main fire. Emphasis here is on the consolidation of fallback lines north and north east of the town.
The fire coming down from the North East region will be managed by Gippsland Incident Management Teams from tomorrow, who will work to consolidate a westerly edge on the fire.
Regional Fire Coordinator Peter Dowler said that while may of the strategies being implemented in this battle are working, there is still a long way to go.
There will be a manned roadblock north of Buchan from today, with a permit system for stock and fodder transport to the north of Buchan. People will need to contact the Animal Welfare office on 51 594266 for a permit on the day they want to transport livestock or fodder. Entry will only be allowed if the load and the conditions are suitable. Any loads of fodder must be covered with a tarpaulin to reduce the risk of embers igniting the load.
