Recycling increases, but avoid contamination

Latrobe City has embraced the new recycling and waste service that was implemented throughout the municipality in July.

By Latrobe Shire Council - 11th August 2004 - Back to News

Prior to the new waste service, 1600 tonnes of rubbish was sent to landfill in Latrobe per month, but this has now been reduced to less than 1000 tonnes.

Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Darrell White, said that although there has been an increase in recycling, people still need to consider what they put in their recycling bin to avoid contamination.

"The new three bin service has made the recycling process easier for Latrobe residents, however contamination is still occurring in a few areas throughout the municipality. If people are unsure about what to put in the recycling bin they can refer to the information on the back of the fridge magnet or in the ‘Your New Recycling and Waste Service’ booklet, both of which were distributed with the new bins."

"Residents are not expected to know everything that they can and can not recycle, and for many people, recycling requires changing long established habits. Therefore, the information that was distributed with the bins was designed to make the recycling process as simple and easy as possible to integrate into Latrobe City homes. If people have lost or thrown out their fridge magnet or booklet and require a new one, they can contact Citizen Services on telephone 1300 367 700 to arrange for a replacement to be sent to their home," Cr White added.

Manager DASMA Environmental Solutions, Neville Bond, said that it is very encouraging to see the increased levels of recycling in the community, but there is still plenty of room for improvement.

"We are still getting much higher levels of contamination of recyclable material coming into the facility than what we would like to see. It is important for residents to ensure that only domestic recyclables are placed in their recycling bin," Mr Bond said.

"Items such as fencing, wire, gas bottles, motor vehicles, radiators, hydraulic jacks and tyre rims must not be placed in the recycling bins but they can be taken directly to the transfer stations.

"Also, residents should put bottles, cans and paper loosely together in the recycle bin and not place them inside plastic bags. Unfortunately, if recyclables are hidden inside plastic bags, we are not able to process them in the same way and they will be treated as garbage and sent to landfill," Mr Bond added.

Residents requiring any information about recycling or the new waste service can contact Latrobe City’s Waste Education Officer, Peter Collins, telephone 1300 367 700, or Cleanaway, telephone 1800 007 543.
