Bass Coast Shire’s Visitor Services Manager, Peter Francis, said that the whole network of Visitor Information Centres was nominated for the award.

"That includes our Cowes, Inverloch, Wonthaggi and Newhaven Centres.

"Our staff and volunteers at the Centres deal with an enormous number of visitors each year and they all deserve recognition for the great work they do.

"I’d particularly like to thank and congratulate them on receiving this award," said Mr Francis.

The prestigious Tourism Awards salute the tourism industry’s leading operators, businesses and individuals. They reinforce the enormous value of tourism to the community and highlight the great experiences on offer across Victoria. They also recognise the hard work of tourism operators who go that extra step to provide their guests with a quality experience.

Winners in this year’s Awards were announced across 29 categories ranging from all levels of accommodation to tourism retailing, education and training and marketing. Two additional awards honoured personal contributions to the industry.

Tourism Minister John Pandazopoulos congratulated Bass Coast for its achievement.

"The awards process is not an easy one, nor is it meant to be," Mr Pandazopoulos said.

"The Awards recognise people striving for excellence – it’s not about being first past the post."

As a Victorian Tourism Awards winner, Bass Coast is now automatically entered into the 2006 Australian Tourism Awards to be held in Sydney in February 2007
