Princes Drive traffic lights turn on Morwell pedestriansMorwell’s new pedestrian crossing on Princes Drive at its intersection with Church Street is now operating, together with a footpath connection to the existing subway. By Latrobe City - 7th May 2003 - Back to News Morwell’s new pedestrian crossing on Princes Drive at its intersection with Church Street is now operating, together with a footpath connection to the existing subway. The crossing completes a further stage in linking the commercial areas north and south of the railway line in a more inviting and practical way.
Chairperson of the Morwell CBD Revitalisation Taskforce, Councillor Darrell White, said he was delighted that another step towards revitalising down-town Morwell had been reached.
The new crossing has traffic lights that can be activated by pedestrians, providing a safer means of crossing Princes Drive, and follows the reversal of the traffic flow that came into effect earlier in the year in Church Street, and removal of the subway under Princes Drive.
"With the recent works we see more of the vision for the Morwell CBD being realised. However, there is still a lot of work to be done with landscaping taking place in the vicinity over the next few months," Cr White said.
"Work is also expected to commence shortly on the redevelopment of the transport interchange near the Morwell Railway Station which will upgrade facilities for bus, taxi and rail connections. Council staff are also currently working with the State Government on the development of a new subway," Cr White said.
"I have already received very positive feedback from shoppers and businesses about the reconfigured intersection and the difference it has made to the vibrancy of the commercial area. The new crossing now enhances safety for pedestrians adding to the attractiveness of shopping north of the railway line," Cr White added.
Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Graeme Middlemiss, said the Morwell streetscape was changing at an unprecedented pace. "The refurbished Latrobe Regional Gallery has reopened and is increasingly becoming an attraction to arts patrons, and work has already commenced on the Justice Precinct. Together with the interconnectedness projects in the CBD, the revitalisation strategy is well and truly being realised," Cr Middlemiss said.
