Your local Native Vegetation Officer will be able to explain to you all about native vegetation and the various schemes that are underway to help protect and promote it and to help landowners do their part to enhance the biodiversity of our region. September is Biodiversity month, so it's a good time to be thinking about our native species of flora and fauna and how we can help to preserve our environment for future generations. If you own land, it may well be that there is some native vegetation on your property that would benefit from being protected. If you don't own land, but you have a garden, there may be opportunities for you to plant native species of flora that will both beautify your garden, will survive the harsh Australian environment and will attract native birds and insects that will also help to improve our environment. So everyone can play a part in preserving our native species, whether they own a large or small plot of land. It's not necessarily beauty that needs to be protected either. For instance, there are areas of damp forest and swamp scrub that may not be everyone's idea of attractive plants, but are still native species of flora that are endangered and need our help to survive. If you're not sure whether you have threatened species on your property, contact a Native Vegetation Officer from the Department of Sustainability and Environment (DSE) and they will come out and identify the plants and talk to you about the best ways to protect them. In Gippsland there are people who can provide advice on native vegetation and biodiversity at the Traralgon DSE office on 51 722111, the Leongatha DPI office on 56 629900 and the Bairnsdale DSE office on 51 520600.Source: http://gippsland.com/ Published by: news@gippsland.com Related Articles
