Bass Success Story For Lake Glenmaggie

Fisheries Victoria has stocked Lake Glenmaggie near Heyfield with over 44000 Australian Bass during the last three years.

By Department of Primary Industries - 9th August 2005 - Back to News

These fish have been produced from brood stock taken from the Gippsland Lakes catchment area. This was necessary to maintain the genetic integrity of the Bass population within the catchment.

The initial stocking of 12450 Bass took place in March 2002 with assistance from the Heyfield Angling Club.

These fish have reached the legal minimum size of 25 centimetres in three years.

This is well ahead of growth rates for Bass anywhere else in Victoria.

The interest in Bass fishing has increased dramatically in recent years; this probably reflects its dual status as a premier sporting fish and a native species.

Lake Glenmaggie should provide excellent fishing for Australian Bass over the next few years.
