Tanzania Comes To Phillip Island

Tanzania is Bass Coast Shire’s adopted team for the Games. Celebrating this special relationship, the Tanzanian Golden Pride Children’s Choir are visiting Phillip Island on Friday 17 March.

As well as treating the children of the choir to some of our local attractions, the trip will include a special performance at 5 pm at the Phillip Island Adventure Resort (Phillip Island Tourist Road, opposite Koala Reserve).

The 42 children who make up the choir are from remote villages in Tanzania, yet their extraordinary voices have taken them around the world. Discovered by an Australian mining engineer, Grant Pierce, the choir has performed at Womad UK and has been invited to Australia as part of the Festival Melbourne 2006.

Their Phillip Island performance is the Choir’s only concert outside the Festival schedule. Several members of the Tanzanian Commonwealth Games team will also be present at the Choir’s performance.

Chef de Mission of the Tanzanian team, Henry Ramadhani, visited the Shire this week – spending a day to see the sights and visit with Wonthaggi North Primary School.

Entry to the Choir’s performance is a gold coin donation and the money raised will go towards the development of a school in Tanzania.
