The pool has been closed for maintenance since 5 March due to concerns about people slipping on the surface around the pool. Bass Coast Shire Council’s Community and Economic Development Director, Patti Wenn, said non slip rubber matting will be installed at the pool as a temporary safety measure. "The matting has arrived in "The matting will be placed in the high risk areas, to provide a safe access from the pool and to the canteen area." Ms Wenn said the matting was being installed so the facility could be opened again immediately. "We are investigating a long term solution, but it is very important to get the pool open again as quickly as possible," said Ms Wenn. Bass Coast YMCA Manager, Andrew Mundy, said they were getting quotes on a new surface for the concourse area. "We are looking at the surface used at the pool in Cardinia, which is a much larger area and has more pedestrian traffic than our pool," Mr Mundy said. "This treatment will cost around $40,000, but has a 10 year lifespan. "Currently we have to treat the surface every three to five years, so this will be a more economical and effective approach." Until the new surface is applied, the area around the deep end of the pool will be cordoned off, to ensure that people do not use that area when they move around the pool. The initial closure of the pool was prompted by concerns from the centre’s staff. "We are not able to discuss any particular incidents, but staff did raise concerns about people slipping over," said Ms Wenn. "The safety of people using the pool is our number one priority. "We are confident that the new treatment will provide a safe surface and in the meantime, the non slip matting means people can continue to use the pool."
