Monash University Gippsland Campus has secured the Career Education Association of Victoria (CEAV) biennial conference which will be held at the Campus from December 4-6, 2005. Career teachers from all over Victoria will be attending a combination of workshops, industry panels and industry visits, some of which will be presented by Monash Gippsland staff. Local sponsors for the event include Loy Yang B, Loy Yang Power, Yallourn Energy, International Power Hazelwood, Australian Paper Maryvale, Latrobe City, GippsTAFE and Monash University.

May 26 is National Day of Healing. Wildfire, a student group on campus that is devoted to leading development for Indigenous health and rural education, is hosting two speakers who will discuss Indigenous affairs. The event will commence at noon in the Student Union lounge.

A Graduate Nurse Information Day for 3rd Year Bachelor of Nursing students will be held at the Gippsland Campus on May 30. Over 20 Melbourne and local hospitals will be sending representatives to speak to the Year 3 students with the aim to recruit graduate nurses for the health care sector.

• Making the Grade

Monash University Gippsland Student Union appointed Ms Marg Dwyer as the new Careers Counsellor at the Gippsland Campus last week. Marg will be located in the Monash Careers and Employment Services Office. Marg joins Monash from the Education Centre Gippsland, Warragul where she was the Jobs Pathway Programme Project Officer.

‘BLACKSPOT’, contemporary Indigenous photography from the Monash University Collection, opened at the Monash University Gippsland Campus Switchback Gallery on May 17. ‘Blackspot’ presents a focused selection of contemporary Indigenous photography with additional selected loans and features works by leading Australian artists Destiny Deacon, Fiona Foley, Leah King-Smith, Tracey Moffatt and Christian Bumbarra Thompson.

Two Monash University students with links to the Gippsland Campus attended the Golden Key awards in Melbourne on May 16. Holly Campbell and Daniel Scicluna both completed the popular Diploma of Foundation Studies program in 2003 and based upon their excellent academic results since, were invited to attend the prestigious academic awards. The Diploma of Foundation Studies program allows students with a lower ENTER to access Monash University. The program has grown from an intake of 40 students in 2000 to more than 100 students in each of the past two years.
