Monash University has received $3 million from the Federal Government to provide fast, reliable and low cost internet connections to other university and TAFE campuses and research organizations from Traralgon to Sale, Maffra, Bairnsdale and Lakes Entrance as well as elsewhere in Australia and overseas. The project will be managed by Monash University on behalf of university campuses across Gippsland and East Gippsland Institute of TAFE.

‘Approaches to Conducting Research with Indigenous Communities’ will be the topic of the Humanities, Communications and Social Sciences Seminar presented by Isabel Ellender on Thursday, September 16 at 1pm in the Link Meeting Room. Ms Ellender will present opinions of Victorian Indigenous people who responded to a questionnaire seeking answers to what they believe is ethical research with insights into different ‘ways of knowing, ways of being and ways of doing’.

‘On-line Teaching and Learning Developments’ will be the topic of the Business and Economics Exchange Forum presented by Mandi Axman and Mark O’Connor on Tuesday, September 14 at 1pm in the Business & Economics Conference Room.

Tamara Emms (Postgraduate Science) will be the next presenter at the Science Postgraduate Seminar on Friday, September 17. Tamara will be talking about industrial and agricultural wastewater treatment options and using anaerobic microorganisms which produce biogas as a byproduct, consisting primarily of methane, which is a source of renewable energy.

• Making the Grade

Associate Professor Len Pullin will be leaving after 15 years service with the Faculty of Business and Economics at the Gippsland Campus. Associate Professor Pullin will take up appointment as Director, Regional Engagement and Dean, Wyalla Campus, University of South Australia with a substantive Chair in Management.

Ray Beebe and Associate Professor Yousef Ibrahim (School of Applied Sciences and Engineering) have just returned from the annual Postgraduate Maintenance and Reliability residential school in Knoxville, Tennesee. The aim is to continue increasing the number of students in the successful off-campus program each year. Currently, more than 30 students take the course. Mr. Been has also recently published a book ‘Predictive Maintenance of Pumps Using Condition Monitoring’ which he was invited to write following a paper he delivered at a conference in Houston. He has presented papers in the USA since 1998 and will be speaking again in Florida this December.
