Rookie Reporters Now Wanted For 2014 Season Member for Morwell Russell Northe today said that aspiring young journalists with a passion for footy can now apply for a highly coveted place in the AFL’s Rookie Reporter Program. By Russell Northe - 29th October 2013 - Back to News Established last year through an innovative partnership between the AFL and the Victorian Coalition Government, the program offers voluntary internship placements. Mr Northe said that the Rookie Reporter Program gives up and coming sports journalists a chance to learn from some of the best sports reporters and editors in the country. "Under the guidance of senior staff, the rookies are mentored and trained in all aspects of media – from covering press conferences, writing news stories and finessing social media skills," Mr Northe said. "It’s a fantastic way for young people to combine their love of footy with their passion for writing. "In addition to learning how a fast-paced, high-profile digital media outlet runs, Rookie Reporters are able to build up a solid portfolio of work and some have gained employment as a direct result of the program." Mr Northe said the Coalition Government was committed to providing young people with opportunities to develop skills and reach their full potential. "Through exciting and innovative partnerships with organisations such as the AFL, we are opening up opportunities for young people to explore career paths that are outside the usual pathways," Mr Northe said. Applications for the 2014 Rookie Reporter Program are now open and close on Sunday 24 November 2013. Applicants must be a Victorian resident between the ages of 18 to 25 and recently completed or currently studying a journalism course at university or TAFE.
