Burial Of Dead StockAs the gritty task of clean up begins, many farmers will be faced with the unpleasant task of disposing of dead stock. By Latrobe City - 13th February 2009 - Back to News It’s a difficult task for those who have already been through the trauma of a bushfire; however, Latrobe City Council has developed a procedure to assist in this regard.
Mayor Cr Lisa Price said that like many of the challenging issues which will face fire affected residents in the coming months, Latrobe City Council stands ready to assist.
"Latrobe City Council has received a number of enquiries from distressed farmers wanting to dispose of animal carcases as quickly as possible.
"The bushfires have taken a significant toll on stock in the fire affected area and we’re in the position of needing to assist in the removal of over 200 animals.
"We understand that this is a very difficult time for many residents and we have sought to establish a process which is mindful of the delicate circumstances of this situation."
Cr Price said that Latrobe City had successfully established a communal site for stock disposal.
"Residents requiring stock disposal can contact Wayne Sim, cleansing service coordinator on 5128 5303.
"Wayne will organise for stock to be collected by a contractor and deposited at the disposal site."
While Latrobe City Council would prefer for carcasses to be collected and deposited within the site which has recently been approved by EPA Victoria, it may be possible to bury stock on-site.
"Residents wishing to dispose of stock on site will need to be assessed prior to establishing a trench to ensure no adverse environmental effects.
"Latrobe City Council officers in cooperation with the EPA can advise residents on whether this is possible."
