Caring For Those Who Care Most

National Carers Week celebration from 14th to 20th October.

At some time in our lives, most of us will become the carer for a loved one, or need a carer ourselves. No matter who you care for, taking on this role is a significant event that brings many challenges and rewards.

From 14 to 20 October, National Carers Week celebrates a time to recognise, promote and value the role of Carers in our community.

Carers make an enormous contribution to our communities as well as our national economy. Without them, the country would need to budget over $60 billion a year to deliver the work and support carers provide.

Carers improve lives, contribute to community's wellbeing and provide a large economic benefit. Council believes Carers deserve recognition for their important role.

Bass Coast Shire Council Mayor, Cr Pamela Rothfield, adds the acknowledgement is also enshrined in law.

"People in care relationships make an enormous contribution to our community. The Carers Recognition Act 2012 recognises their work and unique knowledge they hold about the person in their care," said Cr Rothfield.

"Council’s vision is that all Carers feel acknowledged within the community and supported by the services provided for them. We also believe their valuable ideas play an important role in shaping the kinds of services we offer and they depend on. That’s why Council supports the government legally recognising the work that Carers perform and under the Act."

Council currently provides:

• Carer retreats – Carers and the people they care for go away for three days on a holiday. Carers enjoy these retreats by social connection with other carers, as well as gaining skills and confidence.
• Carer Support Group
• Carer workshops Carer social activities
• Respite services
• Planned Activity Groups
