tree planting day on the banks of Eel Hole Creek in Churchill.

‘Born in a Taxi’ are working with local performers in their performance as part of the ‘Green Expectations’ project.

Creative director of the Green Expectations project, Alison Taylor, said Green Expectations will deliver a range of arts-based projects over the next three year period as one part of ‘Generations’ a national arts program initiated by the Cultural Development Network in Melbourne.

"Five municipal councils around Australia participating in the Generations project have each chosen a theme that addresses concerns most relevant to their community. Each project focuses on demonstrating how the arts can be successful in tackling complex concerns," Ms Taylor explained.

"Latrobe City’s Green Expectations project focuses on greenhouse emissions and is a joint endeavour between the arts unit and council’s sustainability and environment unit.

"Green Expectations has been a supporter of the planting day as the day will assist in offsetting Greenhouse emissions. The drama troupe Born in a Taxi will be conducting roaming performances during the day whilst people are planting vegetation along Eel Hole Creek, adding to the enjoyment of the day’s activity," Ms Taylor said.

"Established in Melbourne in 1989, Born in a Taxi is recognised for producing highly original, physically driven work. Over this time the company has produced original works for arts festivals, street theatre festivals, performance seasons, organisations and corporate events. In any one year the company produces its own indoor theatre seasons, tours internationally, and performs at over 100 corporate events and festivals.

"Born in a Taxi create and perform living statues, theatrical characters, visual spectacles, amusing scenarios and intriguing images through the use of dance, mime and gentle audience interaction. Their gentle humour generates instant audience appeal which is bound to be a hit with those taking part in Saturday’s tree-planting," Ms Taylor said.

The community tree planting day and family fun day in Churchill takes place on Saturday between 10am and 3pm. The aim of the day is to plant 3000 native trees, grasses and shrubs along Eel Hole Creek to improve biodiversity, stabilse the edge of the creek and help offset vehicle emissions.

A free barbecue lunch will be provided for all participants around noon. Those who would like to attend can simply meet at the Churchill Skate Park (near the fire station in Philip Parade in Churchill) from 10am.

"Everyone is welcome to join in the planting and also enjoy the fun and frivolity of Born in a Taxi," Ms Taylor added.
