Þ Before replying to calls or text messages, check the number. If you make a call or return a call using a ‘190’number, you will be generally charged at a higher rate than for a local call. Þ If you receive a text message from a ‘190’ number, you will be generally charged at a higher rate than for a standard text message, and you could also be charged for both the sent and received messages. Þ Text the word ‘STOP’ in reply to any text message you don’t want that uses a ‘190’ number. Þ If you receive a call with an offer that sounds too good to be true, it probably is, so hang up. Þ Be careful giving your phone number to callers you don’t know, even if they claim to be from a reputable organization. Ask them why they need your number and what they will use it for. Þ Look out for terms and conditions which permit the organization to give your number to anyone else. SCAMS TARGET YOU!To find out more about scams and to report scams visit www.scamwatch.gov.au or call 1300 795 995. Recently a person was approached in the car park of Stocklands Plaza in Traralgon by a man in a white Prado van. The male who approached the complainant asked if he wished to purchase a surround sound system. The complainant declined to purchase the system. This information is similar to other incidents that have been reported over the previous 12 months in Melbourne, and various country areas. The van is registered to a company from Moorabbin, that sells electrical equipment. They pull up in car parks, offering the goods for sale from the back of the van, to give the impression that the goods are stolen, and you are getting them dirt cheap. The truth of the matter is that the equipment is not stolen, just extremely poor quality, and in fact it is worth far less than what the seller wants for it. There is no criminal offence being committed. The only offence is to sell without a council permit. Aloe Vera:The healing properties of aloe vera are promoted in many products, especially for sun burnt skin, as it provides cool soothing relief. Test tube studies have shown the substances in aloe vera can kill infectious bacteria and fungi, and block chemicals that help cause inflammation and itching. Rather than buying a commercial product which may contain only a small amount of aloe, try growing your own aloe plant in a pot. Then simply break off a piece of leaf and squeeze the gel from it onto your skin. Neighbourhood Watch Police Concert:There are still some tickets left for the concert given by the Police Show Band and The Pipe Band. The concert will be held at Kernot Hall on July 25th at 7.30pm. Tickets are $7.00 each and are available from Carmen on 5134 1920, or your Zone Leader.
