By Malcolm Lawrence - 4th August 2005 - Back to News

Neighbourhood Watch Area LTB1, Bridle Estate.
Area Manager, Carmen Cook 5134 1920.

Next Meeting
When: Monday 15th August 2005
Time: 7:15 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
Where: Salvation Army Hall,
Bridle Road, Morwell.

Our July meeting was attended by Senior Sergeant Howard Jones who informed the audience that the increased police presence in the area appeared to be having an affect. The crime figures for the previous month were down, though this may also have been helped by the cold weather. A number of arrests have been made, some of which were due to information from the residents. The increased police patrols are still to be maintained. Residents are asked to keep a lookout for unusual or anti-social behaviour and report it immediately to the Police, by dialling 000 (Triple Zero)

Car Theft:

Last year 83,000 cars were stolen, of these 19,000 were never recovered. The vehicles not found have probably been stolen by professional thieves, who steal to order or for parts. A lot of late model cars are taken for this purpose.

The most effective way to avoid your car being taken is to invest in a car alarm or an immobiliser that prevents the car from being started. Never encourage a thief to break into your car by leaving personal items on view. Hide handbags, mobile phones, CDs and loose change or better still take them with you. Always lock your car every time you leave it, even when standing at the pump while you pay for petrol. In the blink of an eye, a thief can open an unlocked door and steal whatever it is that has taken his or her fancy or perhaps the car itself.

Warning To Shoppers:

On returning to her car in a city shopping complex car park, the shopper found she had a flat tyre. She was approached by a man carrying a briefcase who offered to change the wheel. After changing the wheel and putting the flat in the boot along with his briefcase, he asked to be driven to his car parked on the other side of the complex. The lady became suspicious and made the excuse she had to buy something she had forgotten. She contacted the shopping centre security, and when they returned to the car the man was gone. A search of the briefcase still in the boot, contained a knife a mask and some adhesive tape. The Police believe the flat tyre was caused by the man.

A Chain Letter:

Dear wives of husbands who collect old cars and bits of the same, this chain letter will bring you relief and happiness. Unlike other chain letters it does not cost you money. Simply send a copy of this letter to six other wives who are concerned about the condition of their garages and back yards. Just bundle up your husband and send him to the wife at the top of the list. Add your name to the bottom of the list. In just one week you will receive 16,436 husbands and one of them is bound to be a real beaut.

Have faith in this letter. One wife broke the chain and everyone got their old husbands back!
