Interest invoking ideas for your siteWhat grabs the attention of the average consumer, where to get it and how to use it By Emma Kae - 8th August 2000 - Back to News As the rate of on-line visual effect grows, so does the level of consumer interest.
It is now rare to find a site that is composed simply of text. Perhaps because changing fonts and alternating colours are about as exciting as they can get, the interest level required to catch a consumer's attention is just not there.
These days, in a world of growing technology and expertise, web sites run rampant with ravishing effects, images and animations. All created to spark curiosity in the mind of the viewer, this interaction is what makes these sites successful.
A picture is worth a thousand words, and on-line images can demonstrate many things:
How about maps to show your location? Instead of writing "turn right off the highway, continue on for about three minutes, make a left down Tori avenue..." you could make a reference to the map in your local directory or create a lay-out yourself.
Photos can allow you to detail your product range - at a glance - so that people know what you are selling and whether it would be of use to them.
Perhaps you could have pictures of your staff so that people are comfortably familiar with who they are dealing with.
Not only can a site have stationary images, but active elements too. These are things on your web-page that move and change, catching peoples eye. You may have seen them in the form of things like ads or animations. New research shows that people respond more readily to active elements than still parts of the page. Useful ways to use them include:
Advertisements about new offers, products or competitions can be a feature on each page.
"The next best thing to being there" effect - a 3d simulation of a focus in your business like the work-room or jobs in progress.
Funky animations to direct attention on a point being demonstrated.
It is important to give thought to these aspects of design when creating or editing your site. If you want people to take note of what you have to say you need to grab their undivided attention.
