With the Federal Election being called for October 9, Lecturer David Schmitt says local issues, such as the Pakenham Bypass, Wind Farm Power Generation and the plight of the dairy industry could be critical. "In Gippsland the changes wrought by the recent redistribution of electoral boundaries have had a considerable impact on both the local seats. McMillan is now a notional Liberal seat on a margin of 2.9% and Gippsland remains a notional National party seat on a margin of 2.6% with Gippsland looking the most vulnerable if the suggested swing to labour holds-up. In McMillan, Christian Zahra, the sitting Labor member, is facing a challenge from Russell Broadbent, and the National Party. Given the vulnerability of both seats the contest is going to be very intense with more visits from high profile members of all the major parties and promises to rectify whatever issue is likely to undermine their chances of a victory."
