October – a month of celebrations for the over-fifties By Latrobe City Council - 27th September 2005 - Back to News Latrobe City is celebrating the International Day of Older People on Saturday 1 October and extending the celebratory theme by providing a range of free and discount priced events and activities for the over-fifties throughout the month of October.
The celebrations are all registered with the Council of the Ageing which is encouraging participation by Australians aged 50+ years in cultural and leisure activities.
Participants in Latrobe City have their choice of aerobics sessions, aqua classes, gym work outs, concerts, a theatrical performance and guided tour of an art exhibition.
The Latrobe Regional Gallery sets the mood for the celebrations with a tour of the exhibition ‘Town & Country: Portraits of Colonial Homes and Gardens’ on Saturday 1 October.
This stunning exhibition of landscape paintings toured by Bendigo Art Gallery, focuses on the history of house portraits and garden imagery from the Australian colonial period.
The free tour will commence at 2pm from the front desk of Latrobe Regional Gallery and run for approximately 20 minutes. For enquiries and bookings, telephone 5128 5700.
For those passionate or just curious about exercise possibilities, there are free aerobic, aqua and gym classes for the over-fifties to try out at Moe Newborough Sports Centre, Morwell Leisure Centre and Churchill Leisure Centre.
The Moe Newborough Sports Centre will conduct free aqua aerobics classes on Monday 3 October at 1pm, and Friday 7 October at 1pm. There will be free strength and balance classes on Monday 3 October at 2.30pm and Thursday 6 October at 10am. For enquiries and bookings, telephone 5135 8330.
The Morwell Leisure Centre will host a free COTA ‘Power Bar’ class on Tuesday 4 October at 1pm; a free ‘Morwell Movers’ aerobics class Wednesday 5 October at 9am; a free aqua aerobics class on Wednesday 5 October at 10.15am; and a free COTA ‘Back in Action’ class on Thursday 6 October at 1pm. At the Churchill Leisure Centre there will be a free ‘Tight n Toned’ aerobics class on Tuesday 4 October at 9.30am; a free aqua aerobics class on Tuesday 4 October at 10.45am; and a free senior gym class on Thursday 6 October at 11am. For enquiries and bookings, telephone 5122 2504.
Celebrations are not complete without music, so for those with a musical interest, Orchestra Victoria is offering a free concert at Kernot Hall in Morwell on Wednesday 12 October at 7pm, and a free Orchestra Victoria Wind Ensemble performance at the Town Hall in Moe on Thursday 13 October at 2.30pm. Last but certainly not least, activities for the month close with a comedy thriller theatrical performance of ‘President Wilson in Paris’ at the Traralgon Performing Arts Centre being offered to the over-fifties at the concession price of $30.
