Caravan Burlesque Success Caravan Burlesque Success Finucane and Smith’s Caravan Burlesque rolled into Bass Coast in May and put on an amazing show.320 people attended two packed performances. By Bass Coast - 4th June 2012 - Back to News They were surprised and delighted in the tradition of Burlesque, a style where performers serve up parody, exaggeration and spectacular entertainment.
Bass Coast Shire Council’s Acting Community and Economic Development Director, Philippa O’Halloran, said the Bass township came alive with the excitement of the show.
"The Bass and District Sports Club was transformed into a cabaret style theatre. Adding to the atmosphere, a group of volunteers transformed the rooms and hosted in true style, dressing up and providing some fun for the audience," said Mrs O’Halloran.
"Apart from the creative fun, there are social and economic benefits for Bass Coast when we open our doors up to touring performances. There were six people employed to help with the show set up and businesses that helped to get the club looking good were promoted at the event.
"There were also many people who enthusiastically volunteered and said how much enjoyment they had from being a part of the set up or running of the show. Opening up our venues to performances also brings new people into places they may not usually venture, and the Bass and District Sports Club thought this was fantastic," continued Mrs O’Halloran.
The Caravan Burlesque performers also held workshops over weekend and these were a great success. One of these workshops was supported by Wonthaggi Primary School, through use of their hall and Wonthaggi Kindergarten also hosted two workshops.
Phillip Island Learning and Community Centre hosted an art workshop with the aboriginal artist and singer, Kamadi.
"Caravan Burlesque swept into town and raised the spirits of all those who participated in workshops, set up the halls and watched the show," said Mrs O’Halloran.
"This performance definitely left the community wanting more."
Bass Coast Shire Council supported this event as part of the Creative Gippsland Festival, along with other funding partners, Creative Gippsland, Arts Victoria, Vic Health, Festivals Australia, Destination Gippsland and Sofitel.
