‘Town and Mine: Rebuilding the Pilbara’s Iron Ore Unions’ will be presented by Associate Professor Bradon Ellem, Work and Organisational Studies, University of Sydney at the Institute for Regional Studies Seminar on Tuesday, May 3 from 1.30pm-2.30pm. Last year the new Pilbara Miners Union published a pamphlet called ‘Hard Ground –Unions in the Pilbara’ which covered the story of workers and their families caught up in the industrial laboratory of global mining companies made possible by excessively pro-business state and federal governments.

Have you invented something? If so, enter the Gippsland Inventors Competition. Entrants need to complete the registration form by May 1st to win cash prizes and plaques. Prizes will be awarded to winners of each category – Junior, Backyard and Business Inventors. A prize will also be given to the winner of the Peoples’ Choice category. Australian Sustainable Industry Research Centre (ASIRC) at the Gippsland Campus will be showcasing its involvement in the development and evaluation of technologies which can be commercialised through an interactive display at the Baw Baw Shire Council Civic Centre, Warragul on Wednesday, April 27 from 10.30am-5pm. The School of Applied Sciences & Engineering Postgraduate Seminar will discuss how a fungus has been proven to be potent against mosquitoes, especially in temperate countries.

Making the Grade
Second Year Nursing students at the Gippsland Campus will be out on placements in local and metropolitan hospitals for the next three weeks. In their first year students are placed in aged care facilities but in the second year they are given the opportunity to be part of the hectic everyday workings of an emergency centre and wards at a hospital.
