Our October NHW meeting was very well attended. A number of residents raised their concerns regarding the increasing crime rate in our area. Part of the problem appears to be caused by insufficient police to maintain adequate surveillance of the area. A number of unfilled vacancies exist at the Morwell Police Station at the moment.

Party Safe This Summer:

There’s nothing more Australian than a summer party, be it a birthday, anniversary, end of the year celebration, farewell party, graduation or BBQ. The first rule to hosting the perfect party is being prepared.

People can help make their social occasion run smoothly by registering their event with the local police on the Party Safe register. The register is aimed at reducing the incidence of gate crashing and anti social behaviour at parties and social functions.

All you need to do is fill in the PartySafe registration form available from your local police station, and return it at least one week before your party is being held.

The registration form and poster and other material can also be downloaded and printed from the Neighbourhood Watch website. Go to www.neighbourhoodwatch.com.au click on the Latest News, scroll down to Party Safe.

Towing a Van or Trailer:

With the Christmas holidays not far away, you may be intending to tow a caravan, boat or just the humble 6 by 4 trailer. If so, now is the time to start planning for the trip.

  • · Make sure your towing vehicle has a towing kit that complies with vehicle manufacturers recommendations, and suits the van or trailer’s requirements.
  • · Don’t load the towing vehicle beyond its towing weight.
  • · Fit recommended exterior rear view mirrors.
  • · .Check the van or trailer’s tyres for correct inflation, and brakes (if fitted) for operation.
  • · Increase the air pressure in the towing vehicle’s front and rear tyres to the recommendation of the tyre manufacturer.
  • · Carry a fire extinguisher in the van.
  • · Make sure you have a correct spare wheel and jack for the van or trailer.
  • · Check and lubricate the van or trailer’s wheel bearings and condition of tyres.
  • · Fill water tanks and gas bottles and lock and secure the van’s interior.
  • · When towing a van or trailer leave at least 60m between your vehicle and the vehicle ahead.
  • · Perhaps the most important, pull over if you are holding up traffic.

Reducing Car Theft:

The best way to avoid your car being stolen, is to invest in a car alarm or a kill switch that immobilises the car. Do not leave items in cars exposed. Hide handbags, mobile phones, CDs and loose change. Always lock your car, even just to dart into the shop or to pay for petrol. In the blink of an eye, a thief can open an unlocked door or reach through an open window to steal whatever it is that has taken his or her fancy. Never leave your car unattended with the engine running.
