Morwell Falcons facility and Gippsland Sports and Entertainment Park needs funding upgrades for the 2026 Commonwealth Games
The state and federal governments should work in partnership to fully fund a major upgrade of Gippsland Sports and Entertainment Park, ahead of the 2026 Commonwealth Games, according to Member for Gippsland Darren Chester.
The Federal MP inspected the Morwell Falcons facility with The Nationals candidate for Morwell Martin Cameron and said at least $20 million would be needed to prepare the facility for elite competition. "There's major work required on developing female-friendly change rooms, improvements to lighting and spectator facilities, and improved accessibility across the site," Mr Chester said.

Opportunities for local athletes
Mr Chester said, "The redevelopment of the facilities would allow it to host major events like the Commonwealth Games rugby or FIFA Women's World Cup but the scope of works is beyond the capacity of the Latrobe City Council to fund."
"As part of the successful Commonwealth Games 2026 bid for Victoria, there needs to be State and Federal government funding for projects like this which leave a permanent legacy for the development of regional areas like Gippsland."
"Redeveloping the entire sports and entertainment park will make it suitable for a range of elite events and also improve opportunities for local athletes. The Federal Budget in October should include a commitment to fund the master plan developed by Latrobe City Council, in partnership with state government financial support. I will continue to work with all levels of government to support this major investment in the future of our region." Mr Chester said.
Appropriate and safe venues
Mr Cameron said the Latrobe Valley had a rich history at all levels of football, including the National Soccer League, but the facilities had fallen into disrepair.
"Having exceptional facilities is a drawcard for the region and ensures locals can enjoy appropriate and safe venues. I look forward to working with the community and all levels of government to improve infrastructure throughout the Latrobe Valley." Mr Cameron said.
