Newhaven jetty on Bass Coast is ready for renewal
Bass Coast Shire Council is getting ready to complete a renewal of the Newhaven Jetty, which has been damaged due to age and wear and tear from wave action.
The Newhaven jetty project will include increasing the height of the lower deck, to improve capacity during high tides for boat launching and retrieval. The existing upper deck will be replaced and improvements to the substructure will also be completed. The Jetty will be closed throughout the duration of the works which are expected to begin on 4 February and be completed by 22 February subject to favourable weather, tides and contractor availability.
Bass Coast Shire Council has awarded a contract to MACA Civil Pty Ltd to carry out Newhaven Boat Ramp Jetty Renewal Works at Newhaven
Closing the ramp for renewal works
The adjoining boat ramp will be completely closed for four days from 8 February to 11 February to help facilitate these works. Outside of these dates the boat ramp will be open and during working hours the contractor will help facilitate and manage use of the boat ramp for those wishing to launch their boat at Newhaven.
Council understands that the Newhaven boat ramp experiences relatively high use during February. In a normal year, such works would be conducted in a quieter period. However, with the Rhyll boat ramp being closed between 28 February and 1 September, it is important that these essential safety works are conducted in February.
Ensuring a fully functional facility
This ensures that the Newhaven facility will be fully functional in time to accommodate the overflow from the Rhyll facility. This $185,000 project is fully funded by Better Boating Victoria and is being completed as part of Council's 2021/22 Capital Works Program for Marine Structures.
The works will include the use of large plants and machinery and might be noisy at times. Council understands that these works may present an inconvenience to nearby residents and appreciates their patience during these times. Appropriate traffic/pedestrian measures will be in place throughout the duration of the works. The contractor will make every effort to minimise disruptions during construction.
