Southern Rural Water is urging landowners to prepare their dams for forecast heavy rainfall and take safety precautions by:

  • Inspecting and monitoring your dams before heavy rainfall forecast or flooding
  • Clearing spillways and outlet pipes to help pass flood water
  • Repairing any cracks and other defects that will help minimise the potential for any failure

Some of these works may require a licence. Please contact us if you need to check the requirements on: 1300 139 510.

Emergency preparation

Make sure you are familiar with your dam emergency response plan. The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) predicts heavy rainfall across several parts of the state, with many water storages already near capacity. BOM's recent advice indicates that we have two months of above average rainfall ahead of us. The north and west parts of the state can expect rainfall between 10mm to 30mm throughout Wednesday.

BOM also expects widespread rainfall between 20-50mm intensifying across the State on Thursday, with higher falls of 60 to 100mm on and north of the divide. Heavy rain and flood events could lead to the rapid filling of dams as well as overtopping, increasing the risk of dam failure.

For updates on the current major water storage levels across the state, visit Water reporting page. For flood or storm emergency assistance, please contact the VIC SES on 132 500.
