Kilmany overpass is opportunity to create rest stop and lookout for scenic view of Central Gippsland
Danny O'Brien proposes a rest stop and lookout at Kilmany overpass during Princes Highway East duplication works to showcase stunning views and enhance tourism potential.
Works on the Kilmany overpass as part of the Princes Highway East duplication afford an opportunity to highlight one of the best views in Gippsland, according to The Nationals Member for Gippsland South, Danny O'Brien. Mr O'Brien has written to the Minister for Transport and Infrastructure suggesting the development of a rest stop and lookout at the site of the current Kilmany overpass.
Considering the picturesque location and views, it would be ideal for a lookout allowing people to enjoy the scenery and observe trains passing on the new bridge
Scenic train lookout opportunity
Mr O'Brien said, "The current overpass is one of the higher points in the district and affords stunning views across the Macalister Irrigation District (MID) flats towards the Great Dividing Range. With the new train bridge being installed I understand the old overpass won't be removed entirely, presenting a great opportunity for a view stop for the region."
"Given the scenic location and views I believe it would be an excellent location for a lookout, which will enable people to both see the view and watch trains go past on the new bridge. The new bridge will be a significant local landmark and having a viewing area could enable it to be enjoyed by train enthusiasts and motorists alike." Mr O'Brien said.
Mr O'Brien has asked the Minister to investigate whether the current budget for the project may allow for a small amount of work that would provide a rest stop and viewing area at little or no additional cost. "Of course, there would be necessary safety provisions to be put in place, but even a small car park and pedestrian access to the elevated overpass would provide a great tourism asset for the region."
