South Gippsland wins 'Leadership in Climate Adaptation and Resilience' award at the Victorian Marine and Coastal Awards 2024
South Gippsland Shire Council wins the 'Leadership in Climate Adaptation and Resilience' award for its Coastal Strategy, which focuses on protecting communities from climate change through 22 strategic actions.
South Gippsland Shire Council has won the 'Leadership in climate adaptation and resilience' award at the Victorian Marine and Coastal Awards 2024. The award was presented to the council for the South Gippsland Coastal Strategy which aims to respond to climate change and work to secure the protection of coastal communities through the completion of 22 actions.
The award recognizes South Gippsland's Coastal Strategy, which addresses climate change and protects communities through 22 actions, including limiting development in sensitive coastal areas
Coastal strategy excellence
The Strategy proposes bold actions such as the removal of coastal township greenfield areas from the planning scheme and restricting development to one dwelling per lot in sensitive coastal areas. The award success follows previous recognition for the Coastal Strategy at the Planning Institute of Australia's Planning Excellence Awards where the Strategy won the Climate Change and Resilience Award. The award was presented to South Gippsland Shire Council's Director of Future Communities, Lucas Gardiner in Melbourne.
Kerryn Ellis, CEO South Gippsland Shire Council said, "South Gippsland Shire Council is thrilled to receive this award which is testament to the sector-leading work we are doing in this space. The Strategy gives our planning team strong direction, and we are committed to ensuring we can progressively complete each of the included actions."
"We would like to thank the South Gippsland community who partnered with us in this project by providing valuable feedback and ideas. This award recognises that partnership and our collective desire to protect our coastal communities from future coastal hazards," Ms Ellis said.
