Energy costs soar from Allan Labor government misleading promises and inadequate renewable energy plans
Martin Cameron, Member for Morwell, and Nationals colleagues expose the "Soaring Energy Costs" hoax in the SEC rebranding, criticising Labor's misleading promises and inadequate renewable energy plans.
Member for Morwell, Martin Cameron, joined with his National Party colleagues this week to call out the hoax that is the SEC, re-branding the State Electricity Commission "Soaring Energy Costs". On the same day Labor unveiled its plan to enshrine the SEC in the Victorian constitution, MPs wore branded hats to explain what the SEC actually stands for.
In the SEC's year-long existence, there's just a vague $1 billion pledge lacking independent costings, far below the estimated $320 billion for transitioning to renewables
Government energy cost concerns
Leader of The Nationals and Member for Murray Plains, Peter Walsh, says the SEC is a "just a hoax for Victorian consumers". "Martin Cameron has come up with a great idea to explain what the SEC stands for and its Soaring Energy Costs. There's no way known we're going to see costs for electricity come down under the Allan Labor government. It's just a hoax for Victorian consumers."
Mr Cameron said he was tired of the government's spruiking. "The state government's promise that a revived SEC will drive down power prices has already been exposed as a falsity after its former CEO confirmed prices would in fact rise. Under the SEC, 12 months since it was first unveiled, all we have is a vague $1 billion pledge with no independent costs, that experts say is woefully inadequate - the transition to renewables will come at an estimated cost of $320 billion."
"At the very least, the state government is planning to risk $1 billion of our money investing in renewables that the private sector has demonstrated it is already prepared to build - without taxpayer funds. Just remember the SEC stands for Soaring Energy Costs. It's not going to bring our prices down," he said.
