Gippslanders urged to prioritise water safety following tragic drownings at Phillip Island raising summer toll to 19 for Victoria
Unfortunately, four lives were lost at Phillip Island, bringing the summer toll to 19. LSV strongly recommends selecting patrolled locations, evaluating conditions and postponing alcohol consumption to enhance holiday safety.
Life Saving Victoria (LSV) has issued a grave warning to Victorians to stay safe around water after four fatal drownings ahead of this long weekend. Lifesavers responded to an incident at Phillip Island yesterday after reports that four people in the water needed assistance at Newhaven. Tragically, all four people lost their lives, taking the summer drowning toll to 19 people.
Regrettably, Phillip Island witnessed the loss of four lives, contributing to a summer toll of 19
Holiday water safety
While temperatures are not expected to be high, LSV General Manager Lifesaving Services Liam Krige said it's important not to be complacent when recreating in, on and around water. "Yesterday was another tragic reminder that anyone can drown. As we approach a long weekend, we want to remind the community the importance of being aware of the conditions and swimming between the flags to avoid a tragic outcome.
On a public holiday you have double the likelihood of drowning so make choices to safeguard yourself and your loved ones. Opt for patrolled locations and swim between the flags. With 65-plus patrolled locations across the state, including patrolled waterways, the red and yellow flags will not be far away.
Additionally, assessing conditions before entering the water, actively supervising children, wearing life jackets when boating or fishing, and postponing alcohol consumption until after water-related activities are completed are essential practices that can significantly reduce the risk of drowning. By making informed choices, we can collectively contribute to a safer and more enjoyable public holiday for all. For patrol times and locations, visit the Nearest patrolled beaches website.
